Mission

For Learners

Volunteer Resources

Mission:  Develop a better community through literacy.

Vision:   To help learners defeat literacy challenges.

Identity:  We are an organization that provides literacy services that empower adult learners to be successful in the community in the areas of employment, civic duties, and their child’s education.

We believe:

  • Strong, viable communities are comprised of people who are literate, have good communication skills, are adequately trained in employment skills, possess cross-cultural competencies, and have an understanding of community and social services.
  • Each individual holds personal responsibility in his or her learning.
  • Volunteerism provides a very important function in communities; and cost-effective, quality services can be provided using volunteers that are well-trained and supported.

Background:

Jefferson County Literacy Council, Inc. (JCLC) is a private non-profit organization providing literacy and language services throughout Jefferson County. This includes the entire municipalities of Watertown and Whitewater despite their split between other counties. JCLC began forming in 1996 and started operations in 2000.

JCLC is committed to building communities that are strong in literacy, language and cultural understandings through information and resource sharing, referral, assessment and instructional services. The hard work of volunteers, learners, and staff are needed to fulfill our mission, together with funding, resources and facilities.
